Hail Fellow Well Met

Suddenly today a woman called me to say that she was in town and could I have lunch with her?

I recognised her voice instantly, not something that happens to me on the phone, and of course I said Yes.

She was the mother of one of my best friends throughout my teens, and in many ways a mother to me. I've invited her to my wedding, even though a number of my immediate peers aren't invited (no room! no room!) because it'd feel all wrong to get married without her there. Shucks, I used to introduce my important boyfriends to her for approval of some sort.

The rest of the day is a blur. Lunch was very long.
