"But when we have the new baby, mum..."

Linnea was talking about the new baby again today.

She's really keen to have one.

It's strange, because I remember Emer's early days as very hard for Linnea, full of sudden compromise and challenge and being neglected and passed over, but if I look at how Linnea actually behaved, it's clear that they were mainly positive for her.

The nights, now, they were hard, and nothing Linnea will ever say will convince me otherwise. Not having me instantly available at night was hard for Linnea.

But nonetheless she wants another baby. And so do I... The trouble is that the easy, fascinating part is so incredibly brief, and after that it's just as fascinating, but much harder.

Those first couple of months though - where every couple of hours something new happens, some new skill or level of thinking develops - if they ever synthesise it I'll become an addict gladly and with an open heart.

And so will Linnea.

But I bet Emer finds it a hell of a shock.

(Note to the reader: No, I'm not, and I'll tell you when I am, but it won't be for a while yet, ok?)

A friend of mine had her third child in April. They do change so fast at this age.

I think you go my share of Happy Funtimes in those first six months. I struggled so much and wanted to shred bits off anyone who said "Enjoy your baby!" in those early months. There was the occasional smile, tiny hands and not much else by way of enjoyment for me.

Me too. *Enjoy* a baby, are you mad???

For what it's worth, Elena is constantly talking about "her baby sisters" - they seem to have taken the place of any imaginary friends she might have. At first, we tried to explain that there wouldn't be any babies. Now we just nod and follow the story.

My girls both want me to have a baby, preferably a brother. I'd rather have another girl I think.
