Questions

Can you recommend a good book of photographs of babies' faces? It needs to be lightweight (my RSI is predictably affected by having a baby to carry around all the time). I'm usually opposed to this kind of thing as I feel vaguely squeamish about the mild exploitation, but Linnea loves looking at photos o babies' faces, so I don't care how exploitative it is any more.

Does anyone know whether paracetemol and aceteminophen are the same thing, and what the par-mol and minophen bits of the words mean? And the acete bit, for that matter?

Can people who know Rose please ask her to recommend a good Evil Tea for my sinus cold, which has spread to my ears and is causing me immoderate pain? As a breastfeeding mother, I'm not allowed any of the really good drugs. I've been using lemon, ginger and honey, but it's not very effective.

There are rumours (in the instruction manual) that it may be illegal to use a Tommee Tippee baby motion/breathing monitor in Ireland because of it transmitting to the parent unit. It this codswallop or should I conceal the fact that I'm going to import it?

Paracetamol and acetaminophen are the same thing, yes. I have no idea how drug names are composed but they are definitely the same (although from experience I can say don't try asking an American pharmacist, because they'll tell you Paracetamol is a brand name. Uh, no...). The OED tells me that the full name is para-acetylaminophenol, which makes it a bit easier to spot the roots of both there.

Pics of babies: [livejournal.com profile] smallclanger likes the Amazing Baby series, which have good clear pictures in, Dorling Kindersley do a range of titles (Baby's World, names like that), most of which have pictures of babies pulling various expressions, and he also likes this (https://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/1857141822) which has a lot of really good photographs.

"paracetamol" and "acetaminophen" are the same substance. The "aceta" part refers, as far as I know, to acetic acid (think "vinegar").

<fx type="google">
The full chemical name(s) are as below. "N" and "para" refer to the shape. "acetyl" is an acetic acid, with some parts lopped off; "amino" is a nirtogen-hydrogen compound that (among other things) cause the amino acids to be called amino acids. Phenol is a cyclo-carbon.

N-acetyl-para-amino-phenol ; para-acetyl-amino-phenol

If you wish to be deluged with chemistry, "aceta" means an acetyl group on the molecule, ie H-C=O . It joins onto the molecule via the C(arbon).

And, because I felt like it, here is the molecule in ASCII:
The acetyl group is in the bottom left, and "para" means the two things-that-aren't-hydrogen attached to the carbons on the ring are opposite each other.

     H  H-C=C-H
      \  /   \
      N-C    C-OH
     /  \\  //
 HO=C  H-C--C-H
    |
    H

Just to be pedantic... You're missing a carbon there.
H33C-C=O
     H  H-C=C-H
      \  /   \
      N-C    C-OH
     /  \\  //
  O=C  H-C--C-H
    |
  H-C-H
    |
    H

How's that?

I can't offer much advice on most of those except to say that I find that a clove of raw garlic a day does wonders for colds, especially sinus ones (since it has the nice side effect of totally clearing out the sinuses).

However, I thought it worth noting that I totally read that (and even after a first double-take) as: "Can you recommend a good book of photographs of babies' feces?" Um. Eep!

Well, that's I think why my brain just didn't reject it right away; because it started coming up with reasons why someone might actually want to buy such a thing.

A quickie google search shows a list -- I can't think of any that is, in particular, better than any other.

One of my favorite series for seeing faces in general, with people of all ages, is Ann Morris's cultural series, Bread, Bread, Bread, Hats, Hats, Hats, etc.

Other than tea, you might want to try a neti pot or some sort of nasal lavage to clean your sinuses out. It's drug free, and a friend of mine who cannot use drugs swears by it.

Another useful thing is steaming your head over a pot of water with essence of eucalyptus in it, and also sitting in a sauna where you can put water on the rocks.

Good luck!
