That American kidnap/incaerceration/rape/forced pregnancy case

WHY do they keep broadcasting the perpetrator's stupid phonecall statement? There is no other side of the story when you kidnap and rape a child. Not possible. I didn't hear much of it but it appears that part of his defense is that he loved and cherished the children he forced her to have and "slept with them in his arms every night."

WHY AM I NOT REASSURED I DON'T UNDERSTAND!

Dear gods, thats nasty, at the stepfather is exonerated, it can't be much fun being suspected of murder for 18 yrs. The kidnapper/rapist sounds like a complete wacko - if he was so changed by the birth of his 11 yr old daughter, why didn't he give the poor child back to her parents?

I don't think they broadcast it because they want to show that he might've been not so bad after all. I think they broadcast it because people are fascinated (at least some are) by what goes through the mind of a monster and how he justifies himself to himself, and they want to know. I read memoirs of concentration camp commandants when I was studying the Holocaust for the same reason -- I wanted to understand what the hell they thought they were doing, not because I thought there could be any justification but because they were so alien to me, and I wanted to find out what I could about that alienness.

Ah, well, that's a different matter. I can understand that. I just don't listen to much radio, so it doesn't come up for me.

I just do understand the perverse fascination with "What the blazes was that psychopath thinking?!?!" because it's driven me to some interesting research at times.

They are broadcasting to make it apparent how twisted he is. That anyone can say such things, and truly believe that they are .. true. So it's a measure of how insane he is.

That, and it makes for ghoulish audience reaction.

I suppose 'we' like to think that monsters know they are monsters. That they are self confessed sadists, enjoying what horrors they do.

Whereas the reality for most - that they think they are doing something 'nice' and wonderful for their victim, and only their victim understands them... is quite difficult for most people to hear.

Certainly, the paedophile who raped me when I was a child, believed it was both consensual and mutually enjoyable, and he "had no intention to harm".

But raping children is rather harmful, all the same.

I guess most people prefer that people who do evil, come with large signs on their foreheads saying "evil person" as opposed to be people who are so deluded, they think they do good.

The damage done to the birthed children of the kidnapped mother, goes beyond comprehension...
