Substandard assignment, soft marking

I got 70% on that terrible assignment I did; I suspect I got points for above-average literacy and for obviously not being thick, rather than for having read and understood the material (I didn't read it all, so obviously I couldn't fake it), having constructed a coherent argument (I didn't; I sketched an outline of a coherent argument), or buying the teacher an apple.

Even so, it's a relief to know that I didn't fail, even if it necessarily devalues the 80% I got last time.

One reason you got that 70 percent may be the 80% you got on the previous assignment: instructors tend to give better grades to students they know (or believe, or have been told) do good work, even if the specific assignment is below that person's established standard.
