Levels of self pity are a good indicator for me: if I want to kill the world, I might just be unwell, hungry, tired or having a bad day. If I want to kill the world and it's ALL ITS FAULT because nobody loves me and they'll all be SORRY and see what a good victimised person I REALLY AM, well, then that's usually hormones... ;-P
