Days like this
Everyone slept late and had a pleasant morning. We ate breakfast in stages. Emer and Rob went to town to run errands, coming home by taxi to avoid Emer walking a mile in the hot sun, and Linnea did Yet More Phonics on the laptop, and Mum and I read books. Rob made sandwiches for lunch and Emer and I shared my plateful so that she wouldn't have to eat any crusts.
After lunch the children played indoors to stay out of the heat, and eventually we ate a couple of pints of jelly between us. Then the children went out with Rob to buy more jelly packets and when they came home Rob made salad for dinner. We ate in the garden and finished with picking peas and a blackberry - eight peas in total, I believe.
To top the day off, we found and turned on the lawn sprinkler attachment to the hose, and watered the lawn and the children at the same time. Linnea has had Playing In The Sprinkler as a dearly held ambition for some time now, so she made quite a thing of it - they had to put on their swimsuits and try every single sprinkle pattern on the thing. Then we got them in and into a shallow bath for a pre-bedtime wash.
Postprandial tea in the shade of the parasol with jasmine scent wafting around us was really really lovely. And the Linnea and Emer played together in an unnaturally sisterly, loving way, posing with their arms around each other for photographs and looking mindbogglingly beautiful each in their own way - this evening Emer was being Picturesque and Linnea was being Sophisticated.
This is why they invented the word Idyll.
