As a young naieve person (many decades ago) I just assumed that kids wouldn't play up if you gave them attention for being good (socially appropriate).

Now, having a littlie, I shudder at the simplicity of my previous ideas. With baby & toddler, you just can't give *both* of them that kind of attention - there aren't enough hours in a day ;-)
